Dear Gordonsville Baptist Church Family,
This month, we celebrate as a country 250 years of Independence from tyranny and oppression. Many of our ancestors fled to the colonies long before then to practice their faith freely. Freedom is extremely important to our Christian Faith. The American idea of freedom is linked to autonomy and self-expression. The Christian sense of freedom is liberation from the slavery of sin, so that we may be servants of a living God. While separate, these freedoms are forever linked to one another, as our American sense of freedom protects our right to practice our
Christian faith freely.
As Christians, we are also called to pray that all may come to know the Glory of the Risen Christ and accept him as Lord and Savior. We are also called to pray for our leaders:
"First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way. This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth." 1 Timothy 2:1-4 ESV
I encourage everyone to join me in continued prayer for our State, our Nation, and the World. The following verses are great to pray over, for our leaders, ourselves, and our Faith:
- "Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God." Romans 13:1 ESV
- "Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God." Philippians 4:6 ESV
- "The king’s heart is a stream of water in the hand of the Lord; he turns it wherever he will." Proverbs 21:1 ESV
- "For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together." Colossians 1:16-17 ESV
